You will be reporting to the Owners on a daily basis and you will have full responsibility for the car of the Horses and their tack, including construction and rip down of the stable on a weekly basis, as well as the transportation of the livestock between shows while travelling.
Therefore your duties will include while travelling between mid May and first week of October around the Cotswold area:-
• Day to day management of the livestock, which includes, feed, bedding, general welfare and liaison with the Vet, Dentist and Blacksmith.
• Making sure all of the tack is kept to a high standard and replacement of worn items.
• Construction and rip down of the stable on a weekly basis
• Making sure that the animal are ready for the shows, up to 3 time daily on weekends and up to twice daily on Monday and Thursday’s.
• Assisting the show in other areas as required.
• Making sure that all potential hazards are minimised for the General Public and circus staff.
• Liaison with General Public on a daily basis.
When at base camp in Gloucestershire:-
• Looking after the horses on a daily basis
• Making sure that they are prepared for the new season, including assisting in training of new livestock, and possibly breaking of young horses.
• Assisting with the disposal of old livestock that is superfluous to the new show.
• Helping out at the base camp with other aspects of the show.
This Circus is a small 50 man close knit team; their Big Tent can seat up to 500 people and during the show season will be seen by over 72,000 each year. The Circus was set up in 2000 and is not in it 14th season and has received international reviews across the globe and has showed to the Royal Family and international VIP’s in the past.
This is a full time role, as you will be moving from one site to another on a weekly basis, there will be some assistance provided and you will be working on average 6 day week, with the down day being on average Tues or Wed, as they perform shows every other day.
To be eligible for this role you will need to have extensive experience around horses and ponies, as well as assisting some of the other crew members with their livestock, which includes Turtle Doves, other wild fowl and hounds, which form part of the show. You will need to hold a full HGV1 driving licence, as you will also be driving the vehicle with all of the livestock, ability to work in a multi cultural environment, as other members of the crew are from overseas. Have a calm and structured manner, because that can effect the livestock’s handling. The ability to live rough, as the living conditions are a bit on the basic side, however accommodation will be provided as well as transport.
This role would appeal to someone who is looking for a different role and lifestyle, who is good with working with their hands and is able to muck in with all aspect of the day to day operation of working in a Circus. You will also need to be physically fit as the build and rip down of the stable is very heavy work.
